The Not-So-Ugly Duckling is the ninth episode of Season 2 of The Brady Bunch, and the 34th overall episode of the series. Written by Paul West and directed by Irving J. Moore, it first aired 20 November 1970 on ABC.
Jan's first crush is unrequited, so she makes up an imaginary boyfriend to feel special.
Jan has invited Clark Tyson over to help her with her homework. She has a crush on Clark, but he doesn't even notice Jan as more than a classmate. Clark flips over Marcia, who in turn just sees him as Jan's little friend. Jan is jealous and accuses Marcia of stealing her boyfriend. Marcia finally says, "Jan, if boys don't find you attractive, don't blame it one me."
After Jan asks Greg's advice "for a friend," Jan believes that there is something about her face that is turning off Clark, most specifically her freckles, which she'll do anything to get rid of, including giving herself lemon-juice facials. When Jan overhears Peter talking about a girl that he and Clark like that has freckles, describing her as very appealing, she is devastated and starts crying.
Mike and Carol decide to throw a surprise birthday party for her to cheer her up. When they go upstairs to talk to Jan about Clark, she makes up an imaginary boyfriend named George Glass. Mike and Carol want to invite George to the party, but when the search for him is unsuccessful, they come to the realization that they need to ask a boy about Jan's problems.
Carol asks Clark Tyson about how the boys in their class felt about Jan. He said they all liked her, but he referred to her as a guy, because she didn't dress like a girl. It's her tomboyish appearance and not her freckles that makes Clark refer to her as a guy. Jan puts on a dress and surprises Clark, who barely recognizes her.
- Jan says the phrase, "Mirror Mirror on the wall, who's the fairest one of all," from Disney's Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.
